Psychomotor Practice

The Psychomotor Practice created by Bernard Aucouturier is a methodology whose goal is the psychological maturing of the kid through the psychomotor development.

What do we understand for psychological maturing? It´s the procedure from the pleasure of the movement play and connect to the pleasure of think. The procedure through the kid develops his own mental representations, conscious and subconscious from the actions, feelings and emotions. It´s the procedure through the kid transforms his impetus to go into a symbolic world to guide them and express them. Definitely the procedure through the human baby becomes in an individual subject with his own identity, able to think and wish.

The psychomotor practice boosts the harmonious development of the person because it goes with the growing procedures and identity development; it uses the spontaneous game, the movement, the action and the performance since through the pleasure of the action the boy and the girl discover and conquer the world, express their emotions, their deep affective life and their fantasy world.

To achieve these aims the Psychomotor Practice proposes a method based in space and time pedagogy to let the kid make this procedure in a concrete setting that is the Psychomotor classroom.

“The kid does not pay to learn, but he learns because he plays” and this happens in a very special place: The Psychomotor classroom. A rich, varied and full of colour space, where an attentive adult embraces and keeps the children productions, their difficulties, their fears, their discoveries, their wishes, their pleasures and their feelings. This adult goes with them while their maturing procedure.

The specialist in Psychomotor Practice prepares himself during the whole formation procedure to observe, to embrace and to make sense of the psychomotor expressivity of the kid to give appropriate replies to the kid´s deepest necessities.

These principles govern the two main orientations:

Psychomotor Practice: Educational and preventative:

It finds its implementation field in the school environment between the 0 and the 7 years. It helps to create solid mature bases so the children develop the procedure from the pleasure of the action to the pleasure of the thinking.

Psychomotor Therapy

It is a therapy, which acts through the body action, the game and the movement to re-establish or to set up the integration of the impetus and feelings into the psychic system. It is orientated to work with children with very every kind of difficulties, psychomotor alterations, attention deficit, emotional difficulties, learning difficulties autism, disability, and cerebral palsy…

A bit of psychomotor activity… (The psychomotor activity: a metaphor)

Theoretical knowledge, clinical method, some inspiration, a little bit of art, maybe, and finally the session: Scene of a story in which every gathering the text is written again, with the plasticity of the game, of the movement, of the word, to remodel itself in a fuller way, to reach the pleasure to feel, to reset and find, perhaps, other meaning, to create new emotions, new thoughts, new wishes, We are excited about it because the work itself (the kid acts, play to transform himself) it is alive, and it Always gives us the chance to understand its imperfections and ours.

The meetings with the children happen in the psychomotor classroom where we live some hours together once or twice a week. The days and the months go by between a kid who comes and another leaving, through the door, which opens and closes in silence, joining and separating our lives. It happens this way, we haven´t created this art Works, and they don´t belong to us, from time to time they meet us, but they live their own lives, mysterious lives, lives that we can just take a fragment. And, nevertheless, the time we spend together leave chisel, brush and feather marks, which can modify them, because of what they give to us, because of what we give to them.

Sometimes it is a short way with no setback. Some other times, although we are Always therein the room, it is a long way, a little bit hard, because the kid is not fine and it´s necessary to help him, as long as he opens in the room, as time goes by, his painful and disharmonious interior world, with strong defences, big conflicts, intense fears and tacit hopes, while we try to listen to him, to understand some aspect and provide some answers. Kept and uncontrolled vibrations, confused invaders or almost unreal emotions. Erratic thoughts, story telling, other stories projections, experiences, clumsy brush-stokes on the canvas, which should be amended slowly, very precisely and participating to create a happier painting with its form, with its colours.

This road always runs through the internal creations, which accidentally exist in the hearts and their heads.

And there is a way to jump that apparently says: “I´m afraid to separate my feet from the floor and get away from my safety”. A way to hide that it is translated, as “I want you to look for me to show your affection”. A crocodile game that says “I´m going to bite you one time and another because I´m angry with you”.

And there is a way to abandon you, to release the breath and accept the caress, just after the kid has left the therapist exhausted. The kid sees a basket full of colour strings, marvelled, he takes one of them from the extreme. He begins to run around the room, among all the objects lied before. The aim is easy. He wants the therapist to run behind him, by his way, climbing to the same places and the same way he does, later he moves faster and faster until the therapist begins to pant, to complain, the kid jumps on happiness, he wins and finally he let to be care.

Thanks to these games the kid can satisfy what he wishes, get away from what is invading him, and become established against what is denying him. Everything happens thanks to the pleasure to play together in a relationship, which changes both, while the repetitive mutual questions and the reciprocal answers are transformed in the game room.

It´s a place where you can find different objects, hard and soft, big and small, squared and rounded, malleable and rigid; Things that can be used to destroy and build, to climb and jump, to fall, roll, slide, disappear, carry, cover, swing, throw, receive, dress up, draw, model, etc. Objects that we joint o our actions to reflect the life and its sides, to tell a story.

Playing in the psychomotor room is like a continuous departing: weigh anchor and sail through the relation seas, ploughing the waves of the creativity, of the movement, of the imaginary, of the symbolic, to tie stronger and happier the ropes in the reality port.
